Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Secretary of State of Northern Ireland announce their commitment to work together to address the development of the North West region

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dermot Ahern T.D., and the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Mr. Peter Hain M.P., discussed the importance of the two Governments working together to foster economic growth in the North West .

Generating economic developments and more jobs requires a strong infrastructure base including transport links, telecoms interconnectivity and energy. The two Governments will work together to address these challenges for the benefit of the entire North West.

Attracting inward investment and fostering the growth of the indigenous small business sector are important elements of economic growth. We are going to explore ways of doing this together for the maximum benefit of all the people of the region.

To take forward this work we are asking that the relevant sectoral Ministers, North and South , meet to explore areas and ways in which we can more closely co-operate to maximise the potential of the North West.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs said:

'The fortunes of the entire North West region are interdependent. Development in Donegal and Derry must go hand in hand to endure the potential benefits for all in that region are realised. I am please that we will be working more closely together. It makes sense for us to do so.'

Secretary of State Hain said:

'There are real benefits to be gained by exploring the potential for the economic development of the North West in a more coordinated and concerted  way for the practical and mutual benefit of both jurisdictions.'
