Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, former Fianna Fáil Minister for Tourism and Minister for Justice, has been appointed as the new EU Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science. Given the importance attached to research policy by the Commission, Commissioner designate Geoghegan-Quinn's role will be pivotal in driving the European economy forward.
Speaking on the appointment, EU Commission President, José Manuel Barroso, said "I think this will be very well received in Ireland because I know the commitment of Ireland to this economy of the future, to a more knowledge-based economy, to innovation".
